Camping
Camping season normally begins in April, and continues through the end
of October. Weekend campouts are generally held at campgrounds within
a two-hour drive of central Connecticut, although we do wander farther
occasionally.
Each campout is coordinated by a wagonmaster, who makes reservations
with the campground, plans activities and signs up families wanting to
attend. Members share the wagonmaster duty, and organize one campout per
season. This allows us to camp frequently, without a lot of planning by
any one person. Because we camp as a group, campgrounds usually offer a
discount. There is no minimum number of campouts that members are
required to attend, and families come as their schedules permit.
Camping trips are as busy or laid-back as the
individual family desires. Some weekends are spent visiting local fairs or
tourist attractions, others doing nothing more than reading a good novel.
Always present is the opportunity to spend time with friends and a chance
for the kids to get together and enjoy age-appropriate activities.
In addition to chapter and state-wide campouts,
every year there are regional and national FCRV events. The 2006 Northeast
Regional campout was held in Connecticut, and New York in October
of 2007. The largest campouts are the annual National Campvention held every
July, and the winter Retiree Rally in February or March. The 2007
Campvention was in Colorado, 2008 in Pennsylvania and comes to Missouri
in 2009.
Connecticut FCRV members frequently travel to national events, and are well
known as enthusiastic participants in social functions, athletic
competitions and world-class noise parades!
